Flat Feet

problem that occurs in a high number of people is a low arch on the inside of the foot. This can occur in severe cases where the person has no arch at all and is referred to as having flatfeet. However, this can also occur in a less severe form where the arch flattens during walking. Either form can cause significant problems in the long-term.

Having flatfeet can occur at birth or over time. Either way there is usually a genetic predisposition for the disorder. If a person acquires flatfeet over time it is due to the ligaments in the feet being too loose and allowing the joints of the feet to move excessively. Successive movement allows the arch to drop.

When the arch drops, this causes movement of the bones closer to the toes and closer to the ankles. This movement is what causes the majority of the problems seen with flatfeet. Flatfeet can cause deformity such as; bunions, hammertoes, Achilles tendinitis, heel pain, ankle pain, pain in the ball of the foot. Often people are seen in our podiatry office with these complaints not knowing that they are caused by the flattening of the arch.

The progression of flattening of the arch can be prevented or slow down with many techniques. First you should have an evaluation by Dr. Shariff or myself to evaluate the specific problem that is causing the flattening of the arch. The flattening of the arch is a complex deformity that needs a full evaluation to assess and prescribe the proper treatment.

Often the treatment involves supporting arch with shoe inserts. The shoe inserts help hold up the arch and don't allow the bones to move out of alignment. There are many different types arch supports. Most people heard of the Dr. Scholl's arch supports. These arch supports are not recommended by Dr. Shariff for myself. The Dr. Scholl's arch supports are only cushions. They give no support to the arch and do not correct the problem. Good arch supports have a solid construct in the arch. This is often made of plastic. These arch supports will actually hold up the arch and keep the bones and alignment.

The best type of arch supports are custom arch supports. These are made specifically to an individuals feet. First a cast is taken of your feet. Then he casts are used to make a mold of your feet. These malls are then used to make a arch support with the perfect height for your arch.

Flatfeet can cause a significant number of problems with your feet, knees, hips, and back. If you suspect that your archs are low or abnormal you should have examination to evaluate you for any problems that may occur.
